It's A Dirty Job...

but someone's gotta do it.  We learned this lesson the hard way with our first DIY home improvement project-scraping the lovely mid80's popcorn ceilings.  The previous owners were nice enough to scrape the main living area (including kitchen) and master bathroom at some point.  We decided to go ahead and finish the job so we had 3 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, and the laundry room to scrape.  Here are some shots of what the ceilings looked like before we started...

Laundry room

Hallway in master bedroom.

I had done alot of internet research about this project before we started, but never having done it myself I decided to tackle the laundry room first so that way if I screwed up it wouldn't really matter.  Step 1 involves wetting the ceiling.  I found a really helpful tip somewhere that suggested using a garden sprayer for this job, and thank goodness we picked one up at Lowe's that morning because it made everything so much easier.  Step 2 is scraping the wet gunk off of the ceiling.  Sounds easy right?  Actually, it is pretty simple, but unfortunately once we figured out the correct technique so you didn't wind up looking like the creature from the bird poop lagoon it was already too late for me.  I won't go into the technical details here, but if you ever decide you are crazy enough to attempt this project, give me a call and I'll give you all the helpful hints we learned through trial and error.

This job is M-E-S-S-Y!
This is so messy that I can't imagine doing it in a place where you were worried about it getting on the floor.  Luckily, we are ripping up the carpet so we were able to just go to town as you can see in the next few photos.
This is the living room after we had been walking through it all morning.

Seriously this picture doesn't even do it justice.  I was COVERED.

A lovely shot of what your floor will look like during this project.
Luckily, we were fortunate enough not to have to go through this alone.  Our friends Joey and Chanel came over to lend a hand.  Chanel got down and dirty with the popcorn scraping...
and while we were doing this, Joey was nice enough to remove all the doors, hinges, and handles off of the kitchen cabinets so that we would be ready to go for project #2.
Are they the nicest friends ever, or what??

Even though this was time consuming and dirty work, the results were very satisfying.  We let the ceilings dry and now we just have to go back and spackle the parts we accidentally gouged (oops) and then paint!

Here are some shots of the (almost) finished project.

And of course, after a long day of hard work it was time to relax and celebrate!

Stay tuned for project #2...
